Mark Your Calendars: Next Opportunity to Apply for HBGTP Trainee Program in March 2024

Calling all green thumbs! The Historic and Botanic Garden Training Programme (HBGTP) is offering an unrivaled opportunity for passionate individuals committed to establishing a career in horticulture. The program has benefited over 300 trainees so far, and the next opportunity to apply is scheduled for March 2024, with successful applicants starting the program in September 2024.

Are you eager to earn a salary while developing your professional skills in some of the best historic and botanic gardens the UK has to offer? Look no further than HBGTP! With prestigious historic gardens such as Osborne House, Audley End, and Wrest Park having hosted trainees previously, the program provides an excellent platform for budding horticulturists to shine.

The one-year, full-time salaried placement within a historic or botanic garden offers practical experience to people looking to establish a career in horticulture. Trainees will work alongside the gardening team throughout the seasons, developing practical skills and increasing plant knowledge. The program involves completing three projects, maintaining a technical journal, and undertaking weekly plant identification tests.

If you’re wondering if you’re eligible to apply, anyone over 18 with some prior paid or voluntary experience in the horticulture sector can apply. The selection process is highly competitive, with shortlisted candidates interviewed at placement gardens during May and the start of June. The interviews will include a practical element, so be sure to brush up on your skills!

The HBGTP pays a salary of at least the National Living Wage, and candidates can expect to work a standard working week alongside the garden team. Additionally, trainees are given a half day per week for study and fully funded to attend an autumn trainee seminar and spring study tour.

The next intake of trainees will have the chance to develop their skills and gain invaluable experience, setting them up for future career success. With usually 10-20 traineeships available each year, this is your chance to become a part of the HBGTP legacy. If interested, further details can be found in the trainee handbook on the HBGTP website or by contacting the Training Manager during working hours. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to bloom into a flourishing career in horticulture!
